The Cool 20 was a feature that ran in The Village Voice’s insert section The Rock & Roll Quarterly beginning in the Fall of 1988 and continuing through 1993. Art directed by Robert Newman, compiled and written by hipster and illustrator JD King, and drawn and hand-lettered by me, the list was ostensibly a compilation of readers’ choices for what they considered cool and happening. In actuality it ended up being mostly whatever JD had playing on his stereo, his VCR, or happened to be reading that season. Doing this assignment was not only a great cultural education for me, but also a chance to really hone my lettering chops. Long a favorite of art directors, I’ve decided to put the entire series online (at least as much as I could still find to scan). Enjoy!
